The police have arrested four tribal activists who had announced to commit suicide in Lord Birsa Munda’s village Ulihatu on November 15, the day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.

Salkhan Murmu, head of Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan, demanding independent religious enumeration of tribals in India’s census, has said that among the four activists of the organization who threatened to commit suicide, who have been arrested by the police, are residents of Petarwar in Bokaro district. Chandramohan Mardi, Prithvi Murmu and Vikram Hembram of East Singhbhum district and Kanhuram Tudu, resident of Sonua, West Singhbhum.

These workers of an organization called Adivasi Sengal Abhiyan had threatened to commit suicide. On November 8, this organization had organized a big rally on this issue in Ranchi under the leadership of former BJP MP Salkhan Murmu, in which tribals from seven states of India claimed to participate. On November 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to visit his village Ulihatu in Khunti district to pay tribute to the tribal hero of freedom movement Birsa Munda on his birth anniversary.

Activists of Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan had said that on this day, if the PM does not announce the provision of a separate religious code for tribals in the census of India, then they will commit suicide there on the same day.

Premsheela Murmu, a woman activist of Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan, has threatened to commit suicide in front of the statue of Birsa Munda in Jamshedpur on November 15 at 1 pm with this demand. Police are conducting raids to arrest them also.

Let us tell you that in the form used for census in India, there is no option to provide separate identity for the tribal community in the religion column. In the census, data of followers of other religions except Hindu, Islam, Sikh, Christianity, Buddhism and Jain is released as others. The agitated tribals say that they follow Sarna religion. They have a large population throughout the country. In order to give their religion a unique and distinct identity in the entire country, the column of Sarna religion code is necessary in the census form.

The proposal related to this demand was unanimously passed by the Jharkhand Assembly in the year 2020 and sent to the Central Government. About one and a half months ago, Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren had also written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding this. Soren had written in the letter that this is a subject related to the identity and development of tribals across the country. He had demanded a positive decision from the Central Government on the long awaited demand of the tribals.
