The NCERT panel, in its recommendation, has said that epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata should be included in school books as part of the history of the ‘classical period’. However, till now NCERT has not shared any official consent or decision on this subject. The high-level panel has also recommended the Preamble of the Constitution be written in local languages on the walls of classrooms. The panel suggested inclusion of Indian knowledge systems, Vedas and Ayurveda in textbooks.

NCERT’s approval is yet to come on all these suggestions. Apart from this, there is also discussion that Bharat can be written instead of India in NCERT school textbooks. The high level committee of NCERT has also recommended writing Bharat in place of India. At the same time, on changing the name of India to Bharat in textbooks, NCERT says that it is too early to comment on these reports.

NCERT says new syllabus and textbooks are in the process of development. For this purpose various curriculum area groups of respective subject experts are being notified by NCERT. Revising the NCERT syllabus was recommended by a committee headed by Professor ‘CI Isaac’.

According to the recommendation, the name of the country should be Bharat and not India in school textbooks from primary to high-school level. The committee also recommended that the classification of periods in Indian history as ancient, medieval and modern should be phased out. This committee of NCERT argues that instead of the word ancient, the word classical or classical should be used in books.

The committee headed by Isaac, who was awarded the Padma Shri this year, has specifically recommended that the name Bharat instead of India be taught in text books to school students. According to media reports, the committee said that the name Bharat is mentioned in Vishnu Purana. Not only this, Kalidas has used the name Bharat. It is a centuries-old name, while the name India came much later after the invasions of Turks, Afghans and Greeks.

The NCERT committee said that only the name Bharat will be used in all textbooks up to class 12. Along with this, he said that the current curriculum and text books give too much emphasis on Hindu defeat in the battles fought in history. Whereas, Hindu victory is not mentioned. In such a situation, the committee’s emphasis is also on boasting about the victory of Hindu kings.
