After tomato, now onion is robbing the pockets of consumers during the festive season. Onion prices in the retail market have doubled in the last one week, from Rs 30-35 per kg to Rs 60-80 per kg.
This is the second time in the last four months that onion prices have increased after August, when onion had crossed Rs 100. This has put pressure on the kitchen budget after the huge increase in tomato prices a few months ago.

According to wholesalers, early this year onion crop got damaged due to bad weather, extreme heat and regular rains, due to which wholesale onion prices increased.
Pappu Sonkar, a trader from Sitapur Mandi, said, “At present we are getting only 20-30 trucks of onion in the local market. Recently, the strike by onion traders in the neighboring state also disrupted supplies, leading to an increase in prices.
Many restaurants have already removed onions from salad plates, while street food vendors have also reduced their use.
Nazmul Hasan, who runs a restaurant in the old city, said, “Rising onion prices are putting a lot of pressure on our business. Onion is important in our non-vegetarian dishes and when its prices increase, it affects the quality of our food. Unlike big restaurants, we cannot charge extra for lettuce and onions, and this is making it difficult for us to remain profitable.’
