The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has recorded a significant increase in crimes against women, with a total of 4,45,256 cases recorded in 2022, four per cent higher than the 4,28,278 cases recorded last year.

According to a report released by the National Crime Records Bureau, the number of registered cases of crimes against women increased by 4 percent to 445,256 in 2022 compared to 428,278 in 2021. In metro cities with a population of more than 20 lakh, the number of such crimes increased by 12.3 per cent to 48,755 in 2022.
Talking about states, maximum crimes against women were registered in Uttar Pradesh. Last year, the number of such cases in UP was 56,083. According to the “Crime in India 2022” report, in 2021, 49,385 such cases were reported in UP.
In 2022, UP was followed by Maharashtra (45,331 cases) and Rajasthan (45,058 cases). The data revealed that the number of cases against women has increased in most states of India.
Among Union Territories, Delhi recorded the highest number of crimes against women. Even though this was less than the cases reported in 2021, the number was much higher than the 10,093 cases reported in Delhi in 2020.
Among metropolitan cities, the highest number of crimes against women were recorded in Delhi city with 14,158. This was followed by 6,176 cases in Mumbai and 3,924 cases in Bengaluru.
Interestingly, the overall crime rate against women – such cases per 100,000 women – in Jaipur was the highest among all metro cities. According to the report, 239.3 cases of crimes against women were recorded per 100,000 women in the city in 2022. After this, 186.9 cases were registered in Delhi and 174.3 cases in Indore.
Among states, the highest rate of crime against women was recorded in Haryana (118.7), followed by Telangana (117) and Rajasthan (115.1).
Overall, the crime rate in 2022 was 66.4, while in 2021 it was 64.5.
Most of the cases of crimes against women under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) were registered under the category “cruelty by husband or his family members” (31.4 percent). This was followed by “kidnapping of women” (19.2 percent), “assault with intent to outrage the modesty of women” (18.7 percent), and “rape” (7.1 percent).
