Manipur: A mob ransacked two security posts and looted a huge cache of arms and ammunition in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Thursday. Police gave this information.
A security personnel was killed at Kautruk in Bishnupur district when armed assailants engaged in an encounter with security forces.
A Manipur police statement late on Thursday night said the mob attacked the Keerenphabi police post of the 2nd Battalion of the Manipur Armed Police and the Thanglawai police post in Bishnupur and took away a huge cache of arms and ammunition.
The mob of men and women also tried to snatch arms and ammunition from Hingang police station and Singjamei police station in the same district, but were chased away by the security forces.
The exchange of fire between armed attackers and security forces took place in Kautruk, Harothel and Senzam Chirang areas, in which two people, including a security personnel, sustained bullet injuries, the statement said.
The security forces retaliated by firing and repelled the attackers.
When an unruly crowd of 500-600 people gathered at Phougakchao Ikhai on the border of Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts, security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd, in which around 25 people suffered minor injuries.
The situation in the state continued to remain volatile and tense with sporadic incidents of firing and unruly mob gatherings at different places during the last 24 hours. Security forces launched a search operation in sensitive and border areas of the state and destroyed seven illegal bunkers of the attackers.
