Manipur: Around 500 trucks are stranded on Imphal-Jiribam NH-37 due to landslides triggered by heavy rains blocking some parts of the vital road link. An official gave this information on Thursday.
Landslides occurred between Irang and Awangkhul-2, Khongsang and Awangkhul, and Rangkhui village in the mountainous Noney district on Wednesday, blocking the NH-37, stranding around 500 trucks loaded with goods and empties, officials said.
The district administration and other officials have deployed a large number of workers on an emergency basis to clear the landslide from the important national highway and resume traffic on the route.
According to the official, the landslide occurred due to incessant monsoon rains for the past few days.
The closure of the highway is likely to affect the movement of food grains and essential commodities in ethnic violence-ravaged Manipur.
On June 30 last year, a devastating landslide heavily damaged the under-construction structure of the Jiribam-Imphal new railway line in Noney district, killing at least 61 people, most of whom were Territorial Army personnel.
Apart from NH-37, Manipur has another National Highway – Imphal-Dimapur (NH-2), which connects the landlocked state to the rest of the country by road.
NH-2 remained closed for more than two months due to blockade by various organizations following the outbreak of caste violence in Manipur.
