Kerala reports new COVID-19 variant JN.1 case, takes lives of two people, alert issued

A new sub-variant of Corona, JN.1, has been detected in Kerala. The sub-variant was detected in RT-PCR positive samples from Karakulam in Thiruvananthapuram district on 8 December.

There is an atmosphere of panic among the people in Kerala after the death of two people due to the new variant of Corona. At the same time, the concerns of the health department have increased. The Health Department of Kerala has issued an alert across the state. The dead include 77-year-old Kaliyattuparambath Kumaran of Vattoli in Kozhikode district and 82-year-old Palakkandi Abdullah of Panur in Kannur district, The Hindu reported. After Kumaran’s death on Friday, a lab test confirmed that he died due to Corona. Meanwhile, on Saturday, a person named Abdullah died while undergoing treatment for cough and difficulty in breathing in a private hospital in Kozhikode.

A new sub-variant of Corona, JN.1, has been detected in Kerala. The sub-variant was detected in RT-PCR positive samples from Karakulam in Thiruvananthapuram district on 8 December. The sample of a 79-year-old woman was tested by RT-PCR on November 18, and was found infected. The woman had mild symptoms of influenza-like illness and has recovered from coronavirus.

Health officials in Kerala have given instructions to keep strict vigil in government and private hospitals. In view of the increasing number of fever patients, people who have trouble breathing, chest pain, low blood pressure and difficulty in eating are being asked to immediately consult a doctor. People with symptoms of corona have been advised to get tested.

Amidst the panic in the state due to Corona, mock drills were organized in all the health facilities of Kerala under the rules of the Union Health Ministry. A statement issued by the government said that the Health Ministry is in touch with state health officials and the situation is being monitored. The government said that most of the corona cases have mild symptoms and are getting cured at home without any treatment.

After the death of two people due to Corona in Kerala, all precautionary measures are being taken to prevent Corona in Tamil Nadu. Health Minister Ma Subramaniam said that health department officials have been instructed to take necessary steps to prevent the spread of the virus. He said that if there is an increase in corona cases in a particular area, then RTPCR test has been asked. Till December 15, 36 cases of infection were reported in Tamil Nadu.

At the same time, the Karnataka government has decided to conduct mock drills in the hospitals of the state. The government has also convened a technical advisory committee on Covid-19 on Tuesday. Instructions have been given by the government to purchase testing kits. This includes RT-PCR test, rapid antigen test and VTM (viral transport medium).

According to the Union Health Ministry, as per the updates received till Saturday, the total number of Covid-19 cases in the country has increased by 339 new cases. The number of active patients in the country has reached 1492. The death toll has reached 5,33,311. So far, 4,50,04,481 people have been infected with Corona virus in the country, out of which 4,44,69,678 people have recovered from it. The recovery rate has reached 98.81%.
