Reigning champion England captain Jos Buttler, who was the victim of an upset in the World Cup match at the hands of Afghanistan, admitted that his team is not playing at the level it should be playing at. In Sunday’s match, Buttler opted to chase the target and retained his playing-11 in the win over Bangladesh.

After bowling out Afghanistan for 284 runs, England’s batting was very poor and their entire team returned to the pavilion at 215 runs. Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman took three wickets each. After this defeat against Afghanistan, England suffered their second defeat in three matches of the ongoing competition, putting their title defense in a difficult situation.

After the match, Buttler said, “After watching the first few matches here, obviously India went in with an extra seamer in their lineup, we thought the wicket would be like this and maybe there would be dew in the second half, but no I think.” Whatever line-up we had, we were not that good and we did not play well and full credit goes to Afghanistan, they deserve to win.”

He described the defeat to Afghanistan as a big blow and appealed to his team not to lose their confidence, as England now need to win at least five of their remaining six league stage matches to have a chance of reaching the semi-finals.
