Israel denies reports of ceasefire

Israel on Monday denied reports that it had agreed to a ceasefire in southern Gaza to allow the opening of the Rafah border crossing to deliver aid to the Hamas-controlled area. “There is currently no ceasefire for humanitarian aid and the exit of foreigners from the Gaza Strip,” The Times of Israel quoted a statement issued by the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as saying.

Netanyahu’s ministers oppose ceasefire

Earlier, reports said that Israel had agreed to stop firing from 9 am under an agreement with Egypt and the US. Several Likud ministers are strongly opposed to the so-called US-brokered temporary ceasefire to allow aid into the Gaza Strip through the Rafah border with Egypt, The Times of Israel reports.

Energy Minister Israel Katz says he “strongly opposes the opening of the blockade on humanitarian grounds and the resumption of movement of goods into Gaza”. “Our commitment is to the families of those killed and kidnapped hostages – not to the Hamas killers and those who help them,” he said. Culture Minister Mickey Zohar said, “Those who massacre children, rape women and kidnap children do not deserve mercy.”

The American Embassy in Jerusalem had claimed

Meanwhile, Hamas has also said that it had no information about the proposed humanitarian ceasefire at the Rafah border crossing. However, a security alert from the US Embassy in Jerusalem on Monday morning cited media reports as saying that the Rafah crossing would open at 9am on Monday. “We anticipate that the situation at the Rafah crossing will remain volatile and unpredictable. It is unclear whether travelers will be allowed to cross the crossing, or for how long,” the embassy said in the statement.

Relief material is not being supplied in Gaza

The Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt is the only remaining outlet for supplies, but it has been closed for most of the past week, allowing neither Gazans nor foreign nationals to cross. Tons of vital humanitarian supplies for the people in Gaza have been stored on the Egyptian side of the border. Here, due to Israel’s horrific attacks on Gaza, life of the people there has become difficult. People are struggling to survive without food and water.

Ashraf al-Qudra, a ministry spokesman, said rescue operations were facing great difficulties due to continued Israeli air strikes causing widespread destruction in residential neighborhoods and on roads leading to hospitals. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the current death toll in Gaza has surpassed the total death toll of 2014 of 2,251. The conflict lasted for more than seven weeks in 2014.
