In the US state of North Carolina, a homeless encroacher shot dead 46-year-old Indian-origin motel owner Satyen Naik. Police say that the attacker also locked himself in the room and shot himself, after which he also died. The attacker has been identified as 59-year-old Troy Kellam.
Satyen Naik was found injured with bullet wounds outside a room at the Hostess House in Newport. “Just after 10 a.m. Wednesday, a call came in about a person trespassing at the Hostess House Motel,” Newport Police Chief Keith Lewis said, according to a Fox News report. “The emergency call involved a noise in the background,” Lewis said. -A gunshot was heard, followed shortly by another call to 911 that a person had been shot.
After receiving the information, emergency personnel reached the spot and took Satyen Naik to the local hospital, where he died. Police said the motel was a family-owned business and Naik operated the business on a daily basis with his family. Lewis said, “The suspect had locked himself in the room, after which we alerted the SRT (Special Response Team) team and requested their assistance in getting the man out of the room.
Carteret County Sheriff Asa Buck tells WCTI 12 that officers confirmed by ‘pinging’ the suspect’s cellphone that he was locked in a room. They spoke to the man for hours through his friends and negotiators, but Troy refused all police attempts to peacefully leave the room.
