The tension between India and Canada is not showing any signs of decreasing. Meanwhile, the Indian government has taken another big step. According to reports, the Indian government has told Canada that about 40 diplomats will have to be recalled by October 10. However, no official statement has been issued by the Government of India regarding this matter.

According to the ‘Financial Times’ report, Canada has 62 diplomats in India. India said the total number should be reduced by 41. Relations between the two countries had soured after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of being behind the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Since then tension continues between the two countries. Diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Ottawa have reached their lowest level.

This is the reason for the dispute between the two countries

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, during his address to the Canadian Parliament, had alleged that Indian government agents may have been involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Nijjar in June in Surrey, British Columbia. After this, tensions arose in the relations between India and Canada. The standoff has continued since then. India had completely rejected these allegations. Also this allegation was termed as baseless and politically motivated.

The Indian government said Canada has not yet provided any public evidence to support the claim that Nijjar was killed. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently said that the ongoing problem with Canada has been persisting for some years due to government laxity regarding terrorism, extremism and violence in the country. Stating that the current situation cannot be described as an “impasse,” he said the Indian government is ready to consider any relevant points shared by the Canadian side regarding the issue.
