There is peace at the moment after the violence in Haryana’s Nuh, but the atmosphere is tense. This is the reason why a large number of security forces are still deployed in the violence-affected areas. The man who was accused of inciting violence by releasing the video has not been arrested yet. His name is Monu Manesar. Meanwhile, several farmer unions and khap panchayats have appealed for peace and arrest of cow vigilante Monu Manesar.
An assembly of Khaps, farmer unions and religious leaders from Haryana held a ‘Mahapanchayat’ in Hisar to condemn the violence and passed several resolutions for peace and harmony in the region. Recently, letters purportedly written by some panchayat heads in Mahendragarh, Rewari and Jhajjar districts surfaced online. These letters claimed that the panchayats had banned Muslim traders from doing business in their villages. Farmer unions have criticized the Haryana government’s handling of the communal violence in Nuh. At the same time, Khaps have given mixed response. Some khaps have supported the boycott of Muslim traders, while others have condemned the violence and demanded Manesar’s arrest. Khaps, mainly belonging to the Jat community, are demanding Manesar’s arrest and appealing for communal harmony.
On July 31, 6 people lost their lives in the violence in Nuh, when a Vishva Hindu Parishad procession was attacked by a mob. The dead included two home guards and the imam of a mosque. Monu Manesar is wanted in the murder of two Muslim men earlier this year. There were rumors in Nuh that Monu Manesar would join the religious procession in Nuh, which allegedly triggered communal clashes in the city. Later it spread to Gurugram and other areas. So far 113 FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence and 305 people have been arrested. Police is interrogating 106 people in custody, but Monu Manesar has not been arrested till now.
