In Himachal Pradesh, there has been a huge devastation due to landslides amid rains. Dozens of roads have been closed due to landslides. Many houses have become razed. So far more than 70 people have lost their lives by being buried in these. According to NDRF, 29 teams of central forces have been deployed for rescue operations in the state. Of these, 14 teams are active. The rest of the teams have been kept ready. Apart from this, SDRF, Army, Air Force, Police and local authorities are conducting rescue operations in the affected areas.

In the midst of the disaster in Himachal, a 40 km long stretch of the Kalka-Shimla road along the National Highway 5, several parts of the Parwanoo-Solan road have been destroyed by landslides. The question is, who is responsible for such a huge catastrophe? Geologists and experts have made a big statement in this regard.

Geologists and experts have blamed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the disaster. According to geologists and experts, if there was a great need to widen the roads, the alignment of the roads could be changed or tunnels could be constructed there.

Om Bhargava, honorary professor in the Department of Geology, Panjab University and former director of the Geological Survey of India, told The Indian Express that vertical cutting of mountains has made the slopes unstable. It doesn’t matter whether it rains or not. Sooner or later, these slopes establish a balance. For this she slides down.

Om Bhargava further said that vertical cutting means that the slope of the mountain becomes very close to 90 degrees, while according to geologists, the slope should be less than 60 degrees. He said that this is the reason why it is continuously raining stones on the slopes of the highway. In such a situation, traffic is being disrupted on one lane of the highway.
