Pakistan’s former PM Imran Khan will not be released from jail despite the suspension of sentence from the High Court in the Toshakhana case. He will remain in custody in the second case. In fact, Pakistan’s Islamabad High Court today gave a big relief to former PM Imran Khan and suspended his three-year sentence in the Toshakhana case and ordered him to be released. However, a recently set up special court to hear cases under the Official Secrets Act has directed the Attock jail authorities to keep Imran in judicial custody and produce him on August 30 in connection with the Cipher case. .
Earlier in the High Court, a division bench of Chief Justice Amir Farooq and Tariq Mehmood Jahangir passed a brief order declaring the conviction in the case as suspended. As per the order, the former prime minister has been directed to furnish a surety bond of PKR 1,00,000 and a surety of at least one person for his release. Addressing mediapersons outside the High Court, Imran’s lawyer Babar Awaz said that following the suspension of the trial court’s verdict, his position as chief of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has also been restored.
