Reiterating that India imposes high taxes on American companies that make motorcycles and cars, former US President Donald Trump has said that he will impose reciprocal taxes on India if he comes to power in 2024.

Referring to the import duty on Harley Davidson motorcycles, Trump has been wanting India to zero export duty from 2019, when he was president. In an interview on Fox Business News, Trump said: “What if America imposes a flat tax on Indian products coming into the US? The other thing I want is a flat tax, India charges us more. Seen in the Harley-Davidson case.

“I was saying, how do you live in a place like India? Oh, not good sir. Why? They have 100 percent, 150 percent and 200 percent tariffs.”

Trump said, “India sends its motorcycles here, there is no tax on it, but when American-made motorcycles go there, it is taxed more. “How come you don’t trade with India? The tariff is so high that no one wants it. But what they want from us, they want us to go there and build a plant, and then you have no tariffs.”

To a question, he said, “You can call it whatever you want. If they are charging us then we will charge them.”

In a 2019 interview with CBS News, Trump said that under his leadership America could no longer be fooled. “We are not a stupid country, which does so bad. Look at India, my one very good friend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, look at what he has done, 100 percent tax on motorcycles, we don’t charge him anything. .”

India had in 2018 reduced customs duties on the Wisconsin-based motorcycle maker to 50 percent after Trump called it “unfair” and threatened to raise tariffs on imports of Indian bikes into the US.

Calling it still unacceptable, the former president lamented that America is a bank that everyone wants to “rob”. The Harley Davidson brand entered the Indian market in 2007 when the US agreed to lift the ban on India’s general exports to the US.
