Officials said that a joint team of police and security forces had received information about the presence of terrorists in Kokernag. After this the team started the search operation. When the terrorists saw themselves surrounded by security forces, they opened indiscriminate fire on them, in which an army colonel, a major and a state deputy superintendent of police were martyred.
After the firing by the terrorists, the security forces also started retaliating. Then heavy firing started from both sides. Additional security teams have reached the spot to search and kill the hidden terrorists and are conducting a large-scale operation by surrounding the entire area.
According to the information, a team of security personnel had reached the area after receiving information about the whereabouts of the terrorists. The officers climbed up to the place where 2-3 terrorists were reported to be hiding, but as soon as they climbed up, the terrorists opened fire on them, in which the Army Colonel was martyred on the spot. While the other two officers were injured by bullets. He was airlifted to 92 Base Hospital, Srinagar, but could not be saved.
