At least three people were killed and four others went missing after a ground caved in an opencast coal mine of Eastern Coalfield Limited in Raniganj coalfield in West Burdwan district of West Bengal. Sources gave this information on Thursday. The incident took place at ECL’s Narayankuri mine in Raniganj.
According to S.S. Kuldeep, Deputy Commissioner (Central), Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, three bodies have been recovered from beneath the mine. “The bodies are being sent to Asansol District Hospital for postmortem,” he said.
Local BJP MLA from Asansol (South) and fashion designer-turned-politician Agnimitra Paul, who was at the spot since late Wednesday night, told the media this morning that operations were being carried out in the area along with a section of the local police and some ECL officials. Illegal mining and coal smuggling are the causes of the tragedy.
Paul said, “There is extreme poverty in the area. There is no scope of employment. Therefore, a section of poor people of the area are getting involved in coal smuggling and illegal mining rackets. They enter the mines without minimum precautions. These Such things are quite common in the areas.”
He also accused the local police of not giving the correct figure of deaths. “As per our information, there are four more bodies inside the mine. But until the last body is recovered, I will not leave from here,” she said.
Trinamool Congress state vice president Jai Prakash Majumdar accused Paul of doing body politics. “The incident is tragic. Now it is our duty to first stand with the family members of the victims. This is not the time to do politics over dead bodies, as BJP leaders often do,” he said.
Till the filing of the report, there was no response from ECL in this matter.
