Afghanistan: More than 320 people killed in Herat earthquake

The official said about 1,000 injured were taken to hospitals in the provincial capital Herat city. Mawlawi Musa Ashari, provincial director of Herat’s National Disaster Management Authority, said 12 villages in Herat’s Zindajan and Ghorian districts were destroyed by the earthquake.

According to the China Earthquake Network Center, two earthquakes of magnitude 6.2 struck Afghanistan on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Earlier, a statement from the country’s National Disaster Management Authority had said 15 people were killed and 40 injured, but locals believe the number of casualties could be higher.

The statement said the number of casualties could rise as there were no reports from Badghis and Farah provinces. Many houses have been partially damaged or completely destroyed in the earthquake.

Rescue teams have been dispatched to the affected areas, it said, adding that provincial government officials have been directed to coordinate their necessary efforts with aid agencies to supply humanitarian assistance to earthquake-affected families.
