At least 20 dead and 27 missing in floods surrounding China’s capital Beijing, thousands evacuated

The city has been receiving continuous heavy rains since July 29, amid the effects of Cyclone Doksuri. As of 6 am on Tuesday, the average rainfall in Beijing was 257.9 mm, while the urban area recorded 235.1 mm. In Mentougou and Fangshan, the average rainfall reached 470.2 mm and 414.6 mm, respectively.

Heavy rains since July 29 have wreaked havoc in China’s capital Beijing. At least 11 people have died and 27 others are missing in the floods triggered by the rains. Local officials informed on Tuesday that so far, around 127,000 residents across the city had to be shifted to safer places due to the rains.

Four people died in Mentougou and two in Fangshan, the districts most affected by the rains, Xinhua news agency reported. Four deaths were reported in Changping district and one in Haidian, according to the capital city’s flood control and drought relief headquarters.

The 27 people reported missing include 13 in Mentougou, 10 in Changping and four in Fangshan. At the same time, due to the devastation caused by heavy rains, around 127,000 residents across the city had to be shifted to safer places. There is news of water entering the houses of lakhs of people.
