The Kargil war is such an example of courage and bravery of the Indian Army, on which the whole country is proud. The country had lost more than 527 of its brave sons in this war fought in Kargil at a height of about 18 thousand feet in the bone-chilling winter. During this, more than 1300 bravehearts were injured while fighting for the country.
5 thousand Pakistani soldiers had infiltrated in Kargil
Starting this war on May 3, 1999, Pakistan had infiltrated the high hills of Kargil with 5,000 soldiers and captured it there. In response, India launched Operation Vijay. The Indian Air Force also used MiG-27 and MiG-29 against Pakistan. After this, wherever Pakistan had captured, bombs were hurled there. Apart from this, many targets of Pakistan were attacked with R-77 missiles with the help of MiG-29.
A large number of rockets and bombs were used in the Kargil war. About 250,000 shells were fired during the war, more than 300 mortars, cannons and rockets were used to fire more than 5,000 bombs. It is said that after the Second World War, the Kargil war was the only war in which such a large number of bombings were carried out on the army of the enemy country.
When did the Kargil war happen?
- May 3, 1999: A Bakarwal (shepherd) informed the Indian Army about the infiltration and occupation of Kargil by the Pakistan Army.
- May 5: When the patrolling team of the Indian Army reached Kargil to seek information, the Pakistani Army took them into custody and killed 5 of them.
- May 9: Indian Army’s stock of ammunition in Kargil was destroyed due to shelling by Pakistanis.
- May 10: For the first time, Pakistani infiltrators were seen in Ladakh’s gateway i.e. Drass, Kaksar and Mushkoh sectors.
- 26 May: Indian Air Force was ordered to take action.
- 27 May: Indian Air Force also used MiG-27 and MiG-29 against Pakistan in action.
- May 28: A MiG-17 helicopter came under Pakistani artillery fire. Four Indian soldiers were martyred in this.
- June 1: There was heavy shelling from Pakistan side on NH-1A.
- June 5: Papers recovered from Pakistani Rangers were released by the Indian Army to the newspapers, in which there was evidence of the presence of Pakistani Rangers.
- June 6: The Indian Army started retaliating with full force.
- June 9: The Indian Army recaptured two forward posts in the Baltic region.
- June 11: India releases recording of conversation between General Pervez Musharraf and Army Chief Lieutenant General Aziz Khan, which makes it clear that Pakistani army is involved in this infiltration.
- June 13: Indian Army captures Toling in Drass sector.
- June 15: US President Bill Clinton calls upon Pervez Musharraf to call his army out of the Kargil sector.
- 29 June: The Indian Army recaptured Point 5060 and Point 5100, two important posts near Tiger Hill.
- July 2: The Indian Army attacked Kargil from three sides.
- July 4: The Indian Army recaptured Tiger Hill.
- July 5: The Indian Army regains control of the Drass sector. Soon after this the Prime Minister of Pakistan told Bill Clinton that he was withdrawing his army from Kargil.
- July 7: Indian Army captures Jubar Hill in Batalik.
- July 11: Pakistani Rangers start fleeing from Batalik.
- July 14: Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared the victory of Operation Vijay.
- July 26: The Prime Minister announced that this day would be celebrated as Vijay Diwas.
