India’s men’s 10m air pistol team won the gold medal at the Asian Games here on Thursday but both the shooters from the country who made it to the finals of the individual event failed to win a medal. Sarabjot Singh, Arjun Singh Cheema and Shiv Narwal defeated the Chinese team in a very close match and secured the top position and gave India its fourth gold medal in shooting. On Wednesday, Indian shooters won 7 medals including two gold.
Now on Thursday morning the pistol shooters continued their brilliant performance by winning the fourth gold medal for India in shooting. The trio of Arjun Cheema, Sarabjot Singh and Shiv Narwal won the gold medal in the 10 meter air pistol event with a score of 1734. India pipped hosts China (score 1733) by just one point.
The Indians scored 284 in the first series and then scored 287, 291, 294, 290 and 288 in the remaining five. In the team competition, Sarabjot scored 580, the best score for the Indians, while Arjun Singh scored 578 and Shiv scored 576.
However, Sarabjot and Arjun Singh Cheema could not repeat their performance in the individual category and finished fourth and eighth respectively. Sarabjot also had chances in the individual event and was in the race for the bronze medal, but his hopes were dashed due to a poor score of 8.8 in the 19th shot and he was eliminated with a score of 219.9.
After the final, Sarabjot said, “I am happy to win the gold in the team event, but disappointed to miss the medal in the individual event. I had chances but made some mistakes and due to this I lost the medal.” She further said that she now aims to participate in the Asian Championships and hopes to achieve a quota place for the Paris Olympics.
