At least six workers were killed and one seriously injured when a service lift in a building collapsed in Maharashtra’s Thane on Sunday evening. The officers provided this information.
According to Thane Municipal Corporation and Disaster Management Center officials, the incident occurred at around 5.35 pm. At Runwal Irene building in Balkumb area near Ghodbunder.
The workers were coming down from the service lift after completing some waterproofing work on the upper floor and roof of the skyrise.
During the ride, a technical fault suddenly occurred midway, the lift rope broke and the lift fell down at high speed and crashed, killing six workers instantly and injuring another.
Thane Fire Brigade and disaster teams have reached the spot for rescue and relief operations. They rescued 21-year-old Sunilkumar Das, who was seriously injured, and took him to a nearby government hospital.
The deceased have been identified as 32-year-old Mahendra Chaupal, 21-year-old Rupeshkumar Das, 47-year-old Haroon Shaikh, 35-year-old Mithilesh, 38-year-old Kalidas, while one is unidentified.
Meanwhile, Dhruv Woolen Mills Pvt Ltd said in a statement, “An unfortunate incident occurred today at our under-construction site at Balkum Thane. The lift was under continuous monitoring and service is provided under the existing annual maintenance contract.”
“The last proactive maintenance was carried out on August 23, where oiling, servicing, lift room check-up, brake settings, car liner checking, up-on limit switch checking were carried out satisfactorily by the vendor.”
The company is further cooperating with the police and other authorities in the investigation process.
