Two people were killed and 85 others injured in separate incidents of aerial firing in Karachi on August 14 to mark Pakistan’s 77th Independence Day. Police gave this information. The dead included a man and a woman, Xinhua news agency quoted city police as telling the media.

Police said the woman was going on a motorcycle when she was shot, while the man was sleeping on the terrace of his house when a bullet grazed him. The injured are being treated at three major hospitals in the city and the condition of some of those who received bullet injuries in the head is critical.

Karachi Police has banned firing in the air and warned the public of consequences if they disobey the order.

DSP Karachi, Syed Hasnain Haider told media persons that a special squad has been formed to stop the display of weapons and aerial firing. He said that strict action will be taken against those who violate the law. Karachi Police told the media that the incident of firing is under investigation.
